Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) today issued the following statement in support of H.R. 5, the Student Success Actwhich was approved by the House of Representatives. H.R. 5 will improve our education system and put our students on a path to success by restoring local control, supporting effective teachers, reducing the federal footprint in our schools, and empowering parents.

“This legislation helps to right the wrongs of our broken education system by bringing back flexibility to schools and school districts and encouraging more effective teaching and learning,” Blackburn said. “As a mother, grandmother, classroom volunteer, and homeroom mother for many years, I know how important this is for our children. The Student Success Act will ensure every child is prepared to compete in today's global workforce.

“The feedback I have received from my constituents in Tennessee over the years from No Child Left Behind is that one-size-fits-all does not work. People do not want these decisions being made in Washington and the Student Success Act would fix this by repealing the federal accountability system and restoring much needed local control. It would also stop the administration’s act of coercing states through Race to the Top funds into adopting specific national academic standards, otherwise known as Common Core.

“H.R. 5 would reduce the federal footprint in our education system by repealing the K-12 waiver schemes and pet programs that have been put in place. This is the right step that we should take -- for our students, for their success, and for their educational opportunities.”
