Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) released the following statement in response to President Obama’s plan to close Gitmo.

“Closing Guantanamo Bay will cement President Obama’s legacy of lawlessness. The GAO already found that President Obama broke the law in 2014 by failing to notify Congress of the release of 5 high value Taliban detainees from Gitmo. The law is a mere suggestion to President Obama and this is further proof of that.

“Moving Guantanamo detainees to American soil will not only create a danger zone in our communities, the President’s own Attorney General and Defense Secretary have agreed it is against the law. My constituents elected me to uphold the Constitution and I will not accept President Obama bringing terrorists to the United States to be read their Miranda rights,” Blackburn said.

Last Congress, Congressman Blackburn and Congressman Frank Wolf (R-VA) introduced the Providing Rigorous Oversight to Terminate Extreme Criminal Transfers (PROTECT) Act, legislation to prevent the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to the United States and provide a long-term solution.
