Blackburn Condemns President Obama’s Lawless Terrorist Trade
Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) issued the following statement in support of H. Res. 644, a resolution the House will vote on this afternoon condemning President Obama for violating the law by negotiating with terrorists to release five Taliban detainees without providing to Congress the required 30-day notice.
“The fact that President Obama would put our nation’s security at risk by negotiating with terrorists to release these five Taliban detainees without first consulting Congress is deeply troubling to me and disrespectful to the American people. Despite the fact the Constitution expressly gives Congress the authority to make rules regarding detainees, this President once again chose to disregard the law and go it alone. This lawless action prevented Congress from fulfilling its duty to conduct proper oversight in a serious national security matter. We were not given the opportunity to assess the national security risks this illegal transfer poses to our country. Furthermore, we were not notified of what security assurances were given from Qatar before the transfer took place. It also brings into question the credibility of the entire negotiating process.”
