Blackburn: We Have an Obligation to the American People to Work Together
Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) issued the following statement on House passage of legislation that would create a bipartisan working group to negotiate a solution to the current fiscal crisis and also ensure all essential employees working right now get paid on time.
“House Republicans are committed to finding a path forward to reopen the government and address the looming debt limit, but we can’t do it alone. That is why today we’re sending a proposal to Senate Majority Leader Reid that would establish a negotiating committee made up of House and Senate leaders from both parties where we can sit down and hash out our differences.
“We have an obligation to the American people to work together and talk through this. In fairness to hard-working taxpayers and future generations, we have a responsibility to come up with a fiscally responsible solution to deal with Washington’s out-of-control spending and solve our nation’s debt crisis.
“The bill also ensures that those essential employees currently working right now, such as the Capitol Police, will be able to receive their paycheck on time. I am hopeful that Harry Reid can find it within himself to put aside the petty politics, show some compassion and accept this reasonable proposal to bring both parties together at the negotiating table and ensure those who serve to protect us continue to get paid.”
