Washington, Feb 25, 2009 - Congressman Marsha Blackburn (TN-7) today voted against passage of H.R. 1105, an omnibus spending bill that will fund the Federal Government for the remainder of FY 2009. The bill contained $410 billion in spending- representing an 8% increase over 2008 levels. Blackburn posted the full text of the bill, along with an analysis of some of the spending on this page.

“This Omnibus bill is the perfect example of how government shouldn’t be run. It represents opaque legislating in an era when we were promised transparency. Most of this bill was never subjected to a committee hearing, amendment, or open debate. Instead, it was written in the Speaker’s office and shoved directly to the floor; complete with nearly 9,000 earmarks. On top of the billions of dollars of wasteful spending we passed last week, this bill contains $3 million for a foot bridge in St. Louis, $5.8 million for the Edward Kennedy Institute for the Senate, and more than a hundred thousand dollars to build an online encyclopedia in Nevada. This glut of backroom spending, at a time when families across the country are tightening their belts, simply has to stop.”
